Lee’s Summit Sunrise Rotary Club #51979 was organized on March 26th 1999 by the Lee’s Summit Rotary Club. As a breakfast club it attracts members who live in Lee’s Summit but may not work in Lee’s Summit. Over the years it has developed a reputation for international service. It has hosted four Russian delegations: one studying our legal system, another of commercial/industrial building contractors, and a third made up of road builders and of higher education and in 2011 the Sunrise Club hosted the French delegation through the “Open Worlds” program. The club has also participated in a school literacy program (supplying school books printed in native dialects) for children in Central America and has built eight water purification plants at schools in Central Thailand. Locally, the club was responsible for raising over $100,000 used in equipping a playground for children with special physical needs. It hosts community wide events including “Chilifest” each September, “Empty Bowls” each February which benefits local human nutrition programs. The club, as a way to fund its many international and local community service and educational projects, sponsors a Holiday Flag Program in Lee’s Summit. Annually, the club places an American flag in the front yard or business for Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day. A significant endeavor of Rotary is the student youth exchange. The Sunrise club has hosted many studens over the past years.
Since its charter 13 years ago the Lee’s Summit Sunrise Rotary Club has supported the following organizations with service projects, cash and in-kind donations totaling in excess of $540,000.
